Next BlueGeneration is an immersive, story-driven game that invites you to explore life above and below the ocean surface while discovering real-world skills and future career paths.

There are a lot of careers to be found in the Blue Economy, and it can be hard to figure out which may be the best fit for you. This is especially true for young people, who may need a hand narrowing down their options in a way that is fun and educational.

But how do we achieve that?

Our Approach

First steps was figuring out all the different skills that make up the different careers. Once we knew what we had to work with, we would group specific skillsets together, and try to come up with gameplay situations that put those skills to use.

We try to carefully strike a balance with what is true to life, and what is fun for players to go through. This means simplifying some of the mechanics but still keeping the spirit of the skills involved.

The Solution

The final product is a collection of minigames that test various skills as you play through them. After playing through all the minigames, players will be presented with different careers arranged according to how well they did overall, and exactly what educations they need to take in order to follow that path.

In order to make sure players don't lose track of their pathway, we have also implemented a pdf-generator system, that allows players to create a PDF version of their Pathway. This way, players have something they can hold onto after finishing the game, and something to follow in their future educations.

Conclusion

Working with the Next BlueGeneration project has been an exciting challenge for our developers, and a pleasant collaboration with our many partners. Despite the amount of data we are working with, and the many systems and languages we have to juggle with, we have managed to create a game that we feel will make a big difference for the future of the Blue Economy.
