The Challenge

When making games based around a story, we have to be careful with how we present everything, in what order, and when. The stories we work with are linear, but the game experience needs to still feel like the player is an active participant in the story. So how do we balance that?

Our Approach

To begin with, we break the overall story into sections. What meaningful moments marks a change in the story? Once we have that figured out, we can start to build the game around these moments, and carefully bring them to life.

Expanding from that. What happens if the character doesn't make that choice? What if they do something else instead? We then figure out how that looks, and start to build the alternate story so players have their own choices to make.

The Solution

In the end, we have not just one story, but two. Ranja and Vivianne, who each have their own storyline and an alternative one. Players going through the game not only learn about each character's stories, but they also get to see what else could have happened if a different choice was made as they replay it.

Their stories are brought to life using the Unity game engine, where players alternate between playing a browser-based point & click game, and a more text-heavy story sequences.

Our
Conclusion

We are proud to present our part in the Storylight Project, and create something that nicely merges comic book storytelling with interactive gameplay.
